Understanding Earth Neutral bond

Writer's picture: Keith GoughKeith Gough

When using the inverter as a UPS in Islanding Mode it is important to ensure the UPS output is maintained as a class one connection rather than a class two.

If the output is a class two then all you can connect to it is a single socket, if you want the output to be connected to the household essential loads then you would need to change the classification of the output from the class 2 to a class 1

Items like toasters refrigerators light fittings are mainly class one products if you don't create this bond then you carry a small risk of electrocution.

This is very important

Hi there- what would be protecting the cable to the socket and socket point in terms of overload, short circuit and earth leakage? Where is the protective devices for that? Are they built into the Sunsynk? Or would a separate DB unit be required from Sunsknk to DB. Then DB to single socket?

Hi my is question what is different if we bond neutral to earth on output side?

Can you recommend a single phase contactor for a 3.6kw inverter please.

I understand that some brands of electronics work best with others. Thanks.

Hi - After a new FW update were done the Neutral Earth Bonding is working perfectly

Thaank you for the support SunSynk! I must now only do it on a new MAX16 inverter

Hi, I noted the following... The 8kW inverters do have a dedicated 230V AC output terminal as explain in the manual. This is marked as ATS. If the Islanding box is ticked under battery settings. This terminal will be activated during a grid outage. It will be 230V. This can be used to drive a external contactor or relay. BUT... !!! the MAX 16 do not have this output.

It is not stopping here, there is another challenge. a Perfectly installed system will trip on the RDC once the above is tried.

I am still trying to figure this out. But once done I will report back.

I am unsure on how to configure the MAX16 still. Please let me…

I honestly think that the inverter with the Neutral Bond are more a type of setting running the inverter in complete Island mode. I do not think the bonding between earth and neutral will be running seamlessly during load shedding schedules once the power is restored. I honestly think until prove wrong that the RCD - Earth Leakage will always trip during cutback to mains. Unless one build a slightly complex changeover with timers. The ATS - name on the inverter 8kW is acronym for Automatic Transfer Switch and one can easily see it is perfect for this.
